iwanrj.com – Jakarta – The mystery of the star Fomalhaut has always intrigued astronomers. Recently, a team of scientists from the University of Arizona and NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory revealed that Fomalhaut is much more complex than we ever thought.
In our outer space, some 25 million light years away, lies the Fomalhaut star system – a world of stars full of surprises and secrets in outer space.
For years, astronomers have been fascinated with Fomalhaut, and now, thanks to the extraordinary James Webb space telescope, we understand it even more.

In a new study published in the journal Nature Astronomy, a team of scientists from the University of Arizona and NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory revealed that Fomalhaut is much more complex than we ever thought.
Surrounding the 440-million-year-old Fomalhaut is a debris field that scientists have known about since 1983. What they didn’t expect to find, however, were three separate debris belts surrounding the star.
The innermost belt is comparable to the asteroid belt in our solar system but much wider, extending from about seven astronomical units of a star to about 80 astronomical units. To compare, it’s about 10 times wider than the inner asteroid belt predicted by astronomers.
However, the most exciting discovery was a second debris belt that lies outside the inner asteroid belt. This debris belt is tilted 23 degrees from everything in the star’s orbit, a completely unique aspect of the system.
According to the study’s lead author, András Gáspár, this tilted belt could be the result of a planet in Fomalhaut’s orbit that astronomers have yet to find.
George Rieke, one of the astronomers involved in the study, likens the Fomalhaut system to a mystery novel.
“Where are the planets?” he asked. “I don’t think there is anything wrong with saying that there is a very interesting planetary system around that star,” said Rieke.
The James Webb Space Telescope, launching in 2021, will prove to be an important tool for studying the Fomalhaut system. Its infrared sensors provide astronomers with unprecedented detail in studying the composition and distribution of debris fields.
