iwanrj.com – Jakarta – Google Authenticator, a two-factor authentication (2FA) app has been updated for iOS and Android smartphones. This update allows the Authenticator application to be synchronized or connected with their Google account, so that the application can be accessed on multiple devices.

Previously, the One Time Password or OTP in the Authenticator was only stored on one device, thereby limiting users from logging into the security service if they did not have their main device.

As a result users will face problems logging in to services that are set up to use 2FA, if their smartphone device is lost, stolen, or damaged.

But the latest Google Authenticator update on Android and iOS, allows users to access their two-factor authentication (2FA) codes on other devices signed in with the same Google account.

The updates to Google Authenticator are detailed by Google in a post on the Google Security blog. A new update for Google Authenticator on iOS and Android adds the ability to back up and sync OTPs across devices signed in to the same Google account.

The search giant stated that the Authenticator feature connected to this Google account will help users access the OTP on other devices, especially when the user experiences a disaster such as a lost cellphone or a broken smartphone.

“We launched a solution to this problem, making the OTP more durable by storing it securely in users’ Google Accounts. Changes users can rely on to maintain access, increase comfort and security,” wrote Google.

quoted Telset from Gadgets 360 on Wednesday (26/04/2023), the Google Authenticator app was launched in 2010 as an alternative to SMS-based one-time passcodes, which are much less secure and unreliable than 2FA apps.

Apps are used to generate 2-factor authentication for various Google apps and services. Once set up, the app displays a unique 6 to 8 digit code that can be used to log into the account.
