This collaboration between Microsoft and AMD is one of Microsoft’s strategy efforts to secure the supply of processors with artificial intelligence power in the market.

In addition, the company also plans to present an alternative choice of Nvidia GPU chips which currently dominate the GPU chip market.

According to Gizmochina’s information, Microsoft and AMD are collaborating in developing an AI technology processor with the code name Athena, which was developed solely by Microsoft and AMD provided financial support.

On the other hand, Microsoft is one of the main cloud computing service providers, and the company has also invested $10 billion in OpenAI, the ChatGPT developer company.

The investment has increased the demand for AI processors and deepened the company’s participation in the industry. In fact, the company is building a chip division with nearly 1,000 employees to work on the Athena project, with an investment of around $2 billion.

Apart from that, AI technology is also a priority for AMD. AMD CEO Lisa Su revealed that the company is very excited about the opportunities in artificial intelligence, which is a priority for her company. He further said there is an opportunity for AMD to manufacture custom chips for the largest customers for use in data centers.

While developing alternative chips from rival Nvidia has been a challenge, Microsoft has prioritized processors codenamed Athena.

This processor involves developing a GPU chip for AI model training and inference. Currently, the chip has been tested internally and is likely to be available on the market as early as next year. [FY/HBS]
